Volunteer Pod

Those who are interested in earning their membership for Cruces Creatives, or are interested in supporting our programs, or are looking to make new friends in our fantastic, artistic community are invited to participate in this volunteer pod.

Tasks vary widely and training is always included. Some common tasks include soldering LEDs and hobby motors, using the laser or Cricut to prepare project materials, light janitorial and organizing work, and plenty of cutting, counting and bundling!

The efforts of our volunteers make all the difference in the programs we are able to offer. We literally cannot do it without you!

Bring your current work-in-progress or unfinished object and join us in the Textile Lab every Friday for an open work session. The lab tools and equipment will be available or participants can bring their own. Socialize with like-minded members and advance your own work. All fiberarts welcome from applique to weaving and beyond.

Youth 3D Printing: Middle School (2026-09-12)

Curious about 3D printing?

Want to be part of making a difference in other's lives?

Join us to learn 3D design, printing, and modeling all while creating practical things for your community. Build some things for yourself, and build many things for distribution through partner organization.

Skills developed in this class will include:

how to operate design software
loading the 3D printer
selecting the correct filament
troubleshooting design and printer issues
business communication skills: how to offer your services and clarify details needed for providing excellent products

Regular attendance is required for all 12 weeks. We want students to make the most of this course as our funding is attendance based.

Lunches will be provided through FYI+

We will:
- Have an introduction to the makerspace and with one another
- Have a deep tour of the building, learning where specific tools and safety devices are

- Finish paperwork and systems needs with membership fees, licenses, getting into our communication system, and receiving your RFID card

Intro to Woodworking: Building Skills & a Beginner Project (Ages 10+)

In this 10-week beginner woodworking class, students will get a hands-on introduction to the craft of woodworking under the guidance of instructor Doug Roby. The class begins with the fundamentals: learning to identify and safely use hand tools and power tools, understanding wood types and properties, and mastering essential shop safety practices that will serve as the foundation for everything that follows.

Once students have built a solid safety and skills base, they'll put their new knowledge into practice by designing and constructing a small woodworking project of their own.

No prior experience is necessary — just a willingness to learn, follow safety guidelines, and get a little sawdust on your hands. By the end of the class, students will walk away with a finished project they built themselves and a solid foundation in woodworking basics they can build on for years to come.

Class runs 10 weeks and is designed for students ages 10 and up.

This class teaches the basic process of creating stained glass artwork, including safety measures, picking out a pattern, selecting glass and colors, how to score(cut) glass and assembly.

Beginners will make a simple project and learn, pattern cutting, color choices for the project, cutting (scoring) glass, grinding, foiling of glass, and soldering (assembling).

No experience needed!

Priced at $30 to cover cost of materials. Members get a 10% discount!

Charitable Crafting Project (2026-09-19)

The Charitable Crafting Project makes textiles for good causes.

In a collaborative effort, participants work hands-on, each participating as they can. Participants with higher levels of skills in a particular area can guide those with lower skill levels, and we'll make as many garments as we have the time, materials, and labor to make.

This is a free program using donated materials. If you’d like to be involved, you can

Help make clothing by sewing or assisting during the charitable crafting sessions
Donate fabric or other sewing supplies by dropping them off at Cruces Creatives during business hours. The project can use yarn, fabric pieces of ½ a yard or longer, inner facings and linings, and other sewing supplies and notions.
Donate new children's clothing.

Ages:
18 and older, or 14-17 with a parent or guardian present

About the facilitator:
Dina Honeycutt has been sewing and practicing other textile crafts for about 45 years, making clothing and toys for friends, family, and charitable projects. She especially enjoys cooperative work for its opportunities to share knowledge and skills.

Orientation

Intended for individuals who would like to participate in family nights as a volunteer activity facilitator, this meeting will discuss the logistics and commitments which accompany this special volunteer opportunity.

Like other volunteer options which qualify you for membership, we are expecting a commitment of approximately 12 hours a month. Most hours will be self-scheduled, but we need you to be available once a month on Tuesday evening for a readiness check, and once a month on Friday evening to lead your activities with the families.

Johnson-Su Bioreactor Construction and Filling Field Day (2026-10-03)

At this Field Day, you’ll learn how to build and fill a Johnson-Su Bioreactor—a low-maintenance, no-turn composting system designed by Dr. David Johnson and Hui-Chun Su. It’s ideal for dry climates, using up to six times less water than traditional composting and requiring no tractor or heavy equipment. The resulting compost is microbe-rich and helps restore soil health. We will be helping Andre at Og Farms set up his reactor and fill it so that he can use the microbe-rich compost on his crops.

Participation is free, and if you’d like to build your own bioreactor, you can purchase a kit at cost ($80 full-scale, $40 half-scale, $20 2’x2′). Payment can be made during registration. If you’re taking a kit home, please bring a truck or large vehicle for transport.

This is a free field day, but participation is capped at 15 people. To save your spot, please preregister.

The Charitable Crafting Project makes textiles for good causes.

This is a free program using donated materials. If you’d like to be involved, you can

Help make clothing by sewing or assisting during the charitable crafting sessions
Donate fabric or other sewing supplies by dropping them off at Cruces Creatives during business hours. The project can use yarn, fabric pieces of ½ a yard or longer, inner facings and linings, and other sewing supplies and notions.
Donate new children's clothing.

Ages:
18 and older, or 14-17 with a parent or guardian present
