Students will learn the basics of how to use a sewing machine while creating their own specialized fabric and softie.  Students will begin their practice by sewing strips onto a foundation to create the unique stripes that are the signature look for these softies.

While previous use of a sewing machine is helpful, it is not required for this class. All materials will be provided.

Students should be at least 11 years old and need to be attending an LCPS school.  Adults who are interested in attending with their LCPS student may also enroll. Separate enrollments are necessary for each participant.

Skills developed in this class will include:

  • How to properly thread the sewing machine

  • Use of straight, zig zag, and decorative stitches

  • Sewing seams on a round form

  • Applique techniques in applying facial features

  • How to catch hair, ears, arms, and legs in the seams so they extend correctly once the softie is turned right side out

  • Clipping curves to remove bulk in seams when turning right side out

  • How to draw and then add seam allowances for arms, legs, ear, beaks, etc.

  • Use of the ladder stitch to close stuffed figures

  • How to stitch an even seam allowance

  • How to use the seam ripper
